A Study on the Status Quo of Reproductive Health Programs in Relation to Persons with Disabilities

This study aims to identify the current (in 2016/17) situation of reproductive health services provided for persons with disabilities in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and analyse the gaps between the needs of persons with disabilities (or their caregivers) and the services being offered by health centres with regard to the availability and suitability of these services. The results of the study were intended to guide the Higher Council for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in developing policies and programs that aim to improve and develop the reproductive health services offered for persons with disabilities and ensure their full access to these services according to the rights granted to them, as well as increasing awareness within persons with disabilities and their families about their reproductive health, especially that reproductive health services in Jordan do not focus on PWDs needs.

Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities became the first disability-focused government body in Jordan to formulate policies, follow up on their implementation and provide technical and knowledge-based support to the executive bodies to implement their programs and plans in accordance with the provisions of the new Law. The Council is the main national reference point vis-à-vis policy-making and the implementation of monitoring processes through clear, scientific, and methodological mechanisms recognized by the new Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The project aims to gain a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of CSE programmes in the Global South, with a focus on the approach taken to address various forms of gender-based violence, including child marriage (Literature review on CSE); investigate the role of teachers and classroom practices in efforts to enhance young men and women’s SHRH, particularly in addressing child marriage in Ethiopia (Case Study in Ethiopia); disseminate knowledge to policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders in Ethiopia and NL by organizing workshops; and strengthen the knowledge generation and dissemination capacity of DEC.
