From research to practice: the value of five years of maternal health research collaboration in Ghana

This project aimed to illustrate the value of research and research capacity building to improve maternal health in Ghana and to share and build support for the value of maternal health research in Ghana and the Netherlands. To achieve these objectives, two knowledge products were produced. The first is a booklet called CARRYCARE: Impressions of Maternal Health Care and Research in Ghana (download below). This booklet is a book of hope, love and inspiration for people involved in maternal and neonatal healthcare and research in Ghana. It was developed in a collaboration between the University Medical Center Utrecht (the Netherlands), the University of Ghana, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Global Health activities of UMC Utrecht aim to promote health and health equity worldwide.

They do this through research and education on six themes:

-Planetary health and exposome research

The research and education of UMC Utrecht Global Health takes place worldwide with projects in:

-sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda

-South America and the Caribbean, including Suriname, Netherlands Antilles, Argentina

-Asia, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia

In all projects they work with local partners. Research capacity strengthening is an important pillar to this work.

Virtual HUB for SRHR promotion

  • Small Grants

To enhance access to information for young people, especially on SSRAJ, where complete and quality information is limited, IPROSARUDE, in partnership with Share-Net International as part of the pilot project for setting up and operating the virtual hub, is in the process of developing a mobile application that can be downloaded on Android devices operating within the Digital Hub mode. The establishment of this platform aims to build the capacities of young people and coaches, organize idea competitions with the support of coaches and experts, and create solutions for the problems identified in the community.

CSE, teachers and formal and informal curricula: A qualitative analysis on the role of teachers in enhancing young women and men’s SRHR

  • Small Grants

The project aims to gain a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of CSE programmes in the Global South, with a focus on the approach taken to address various forms of gender-based violence, including child marriage (Literature review on CSE); investigate the role of teachers and classroom practices in efforts to enhance young men and women’s SHRH, particularly in addressing child marriage in Ethiopia (Case Study in Ethiopia); disseminate knowledge to policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders in Ethiopia and NL by organizing workshops; and strengthen the knowledge generation and dissemination capacity of DEC.
