A Tailor Made Training Guide to Address Harmful Social Norms Affecting Adolescents SRHR

Global evidence shows that despite the availability of SRHR interventions, adolescents continue to suffer from unsafe sexual and reproductive health decisions. Often, rights issues clash with cultural and religious norms and beliefs, even in the presence of SRHR-based tools, policies, and strategies that clearly emphasize respecting, promoting, and fulfilling the sexual health rights of all (WHO).

The impacts of negative social norms on adolescents’ SRHR are widely known; however, very little evidence is available for countering these norms and establishing new social norms to promote sexual health and well-being. This is the context in which this tailor-made training curriculum for empowering adolescents was developed. This training supports adolescents and young people in questioning and challenging existing negative sexual norms to bring about changes that negatively affect their sexual health and overall well-being.

This training guide on puberty-related physical and mental changes corresponding to harmful social norms has been developed. This guide aims to enable young people to think critically and question the practice of these social norms. Equipped with this training and follow-up sessions, adolescents and youth will be able to assume new roles in facilitating social movements and events, working towards building actions to realize SRHR for all.

Dhaka University

Founded in 1921, The University of Dhaka has always had the mission of uplifting the educational standards of the people of the region. It was initially meant to provide tertiary education to people who didn’t have access to higher studies till then. Subsequently, it has contributed significantly to the socio-cultural and political development of what was once East Bengal and then East Pakistan, and is now Bangladesh.

Since its establishment, the university has been fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of its students and their parents. It has, of course, not only been a lighthouse of learning, but has also acted as a torch-bearer of the people of the region in issues such as democracy, freedom of expression, and the need for a just and equitable society. It has always been associated with high quality education and research in which students as well as faculty members and alumni have played their parts. The University of Dhaka’s role has expanded beyond its classrooms and research labs during different crises the country has had to face since 1947. In many ways, thus, the university is unique, for it has played a major role in the creation of the independent nation-state of Bangladesh in 1971.

Practical Action

Practical actions work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. They share what works with others, so many more people can change their worlds.

Jordanien Hashemite Fund of Human Development (JOHUD)

JOHUD is Jordan`s oldest, largest NGO working towards sustainable human development. JOHUD adopts an integrated approach to community development which aims to address poverty alleviation, gender equity, social inclusion and protection of the environment. JOHUD has outreach through a network of 50 Community Development Centres across the Kingdom. JOHUD has been implementing Pockets of Poverty and Village Clusters Projects on behalf of the Government of Jordan to contribute to sustainable rural livelihoods. It is a co-partner in EMPOWERS regional water management programme with CARE.
